So Aly is Allergic to Cashews. . .
Well in the past we have had a hard time keeping Aly well during the month of November. We don’t know what it is but it seems like she gets sick with the weird things or hurt in the weirdest ways in November.
On Sat. she said her throat was hurting and she started
running a fever, it continued all day on Sunday so we decided to take her to
the dr. on Monday. JV did and turns out she had strep throat. She had to stay
home from school on Monday and Tuesday. JV stayed home with her Monday and John
and Alice kept her on Tuesday. I left work to pick her up Tuesday like normal
but when I got to Kroger to get her, John said that she wasn’t feeling good and
her throat was hurting. He said that she ate a cashew, started to eat a second
and immediately said it was stuck in her throat. We thought it was just her
strep acting up, but I thought maybe we should go into Kroger and get her some Benadryl
just in case she was having a reaction to the cashew. I don’t think she had
ever had one before so there was a chance. John went to Kroger and by the time
he came out she was freaking out. She said everything itched and she was crying
and screaming to get her clothes off. I decided to take her to ER because
something wasn’t right. JV was finishing up at the dentist so I had him meet us
there. By the time we got there her whole body was broke out in hives and red
bumps. We went in the ER (and after having to yell at one lady to get off her
butt to get me some help) they took her straight back to look at her. Sure
enough it was a full on allergic reaction.
They put us in a room, gave her a shot of epinephrine to
stop the swelling of her throat and then they said they would do an IV for Benadryl,
steroids and a antihistamine. It took a little time for that so JV decided to
run home and let Marley out, turn the crock pot off and grab Aly a few things.
They did the IV when he was gone and it was awful to watch. I thought she was
going to pass out at one point but she didn’t. After the first round of Benadryl
she started getting really sleepy and she fell asleep on the bed. She slept
most of the time we were there and they finally let us leave about 10:00pm. She
fell asleep in the car on the way home with me and JV went to get her
prescriptions filled.
They gave us a prescription for a epi pen and another
steroid. The discussion came up at the hospital about the fact that she was
taking amoxicillin for her strep so there was a possibility the reaction was to
that. Dad, Paige and Alex are all allergic to some forms of that so there was a
chance.
When we got home she fell asleep again on the coach and her
face started breaking out again. It got pretty bad, but the spots were not
raised or anything so we just decided to keep and eye on her and let her sleep
with us. I didn’t sleep much and kept checking her. Around 2:00am the spots
were almost gone and she slept through the night.
On Wednesday I stayed home from work to keep an eye on her.
She really seemed 100% better but we wanted to be sure she was ok. She finally
got to go back to school on Thursday just in time for PJ day!
We have made an appt to see an allergist on Dec. 17 to have
her tested to see what she specifically is allergic to. We believe its going to
be tree nuts because she has never had a problem with peanut butter or peanut
oil from chick fil a. It seems like she is back to new again and we are so
glad. Until her appt we are keeping her away from all nuts. We have taken an
Epi Pen to school to say there and we keep one with us for now and then
depending on what the dr says we will go from there!
Feeling all better the next day!
